Heisei Democracy has hooked me up with yet another sweet find, as they tend to do during the times I can read. I usually don’t have any time or money [that I'm willing to spend] to really delve into the PVC figure aspect to add onto my semi-otaku status, but the moment I saw the word “Ciel” in a recent figure news article, I had to check it out.
The Ciel and Shion figures are both quite sexy-looking. I actually think that the close-up shots of them are possibly taking away from the actual quality of the smoothness of their paintjobs, but I could be wrong. I like Ciel’s expression moreso than Shion’s. Call it a slight problem of general bias, but I do feel that Shion’s pose and facial expression are much too…playfully cute. She always struck me as a brash, by-the-book character from what I saw from Act Cadenza, but I think that this figure is meant to break away from that and give Shion fans something sweet and moe to suck on.
I’m a die-hard Ciel fan, so I would more than likely find her to be the more attractive investment. Her swords look very well done; they don’t look flimsy, which justifies the $50 purchase. Likewise with Shion’s braided ponytail; it goes beyond just the V-shape and adds in some additional indentations for a bit more detailed depth. The accurate facial depictions of both characters are also right on-target, which further accentuates their pricing. Ciel’s boots seal the deal, while Shion’s careful emblem work, removable hat, and gold bracelet do the same. Lastly, you have the nice wind effect for the lovely folding detail on the clothes and hair, complete with obligatory upskirt shot for those who pay attention to that sort of thing…Stop looking at me like that.
Like I said, figures aren’t in my otaku jurisdiction, but I’d give both of these figures a 4 of 5. They have everything you could want in a PVC figure, but despite all the pros, it really does come down to how much of a fan you are of either one of those. A must-have for Ciel/Shion enthusiasts, though there’s not much else going for them for the rest.
